Is your child starting university this September?

Here are top things all parents and guardians should know

Leaving for university is a stressful time for both students and their parents. We understand how many questions are buzzing in your head about your child’s safety, wellbeing and how many hopes you have that their years at university will be the best time of their life. Especially now that Covid-19 has put a different spin on our understanding of safety, it’s especially important that we reassure you that Abodus will be here for you and your child every step of the way.

We’ve seen many teary farewells and busy moving-in weekends, so let us guide you through what you can expect when checking into your student accommodation this September.

Safety first during your check-in

The start of this academic year, and all the logistics of how and when you can help your student move into their new home-away-from-home may have been in the air for a while.  However, we’re confident that we will be able to provide a relaxing and safe environment in which a broken box or a forgotten pillow will only make you giggle.

You’ll be able to book your check-in slot online before you arrive, so you can plan in advance and pick the best day for you and your family to help the new student settle in as stress-free as possible. Additionally, if you’re worried about how long the check-in is going to take, you can send all the belongings to us in advance and we will take them up to the room. All you need to do when you arrive then is unpack!

Keeping your student home safe & responding to Covid-19

We know it’s vitally important for you to know that your son or daughter’s room and common areas will be spotlessly clean and sanitised as you move in. Health and safety is our top priority, especially now following Covid-19 outbreak which has been an uncertain time for everyone. Our health and safety team has reviewed all relevant UK government guidelines on best practice and put all necessary measures in place to make our buildings as safe as they can be.

Our teams are currently busy getting your room ready and they will continue look after it throughout the year. We have an enhanced cleaning programme across all of our sites, paying particular attention to high-touch areas like lift buttons and door handles. We also installed hand sanitiser stations and floor markings to guide you with social distancing during your check-in and throughout the year. All our site teams are equipped with PPE and trained in the new way of working to keep people safe.

For more information on our response to coronavirus, view our Wellbeing page & Covid-19 video.

Good to know

Apart from enhanced cleaning measures, we make sure our sites are safe and secure, so you feel confident leaving your child to enjoy their time at university.

All of our properties have onsite security staff and digital entry systems as well as individual locks on each and every room. Not only that, but we have CCTV in every home. For most of our sites an emergency contact number will also be provided when staff are not onsite, ensuring that our buildings are safe and secure.

Providing great student experience for your child

Our goal is to ensure that our students have an amazing experience at university, even during this uncertain time. Moving away from home and living independently can be stressful for anyone, but particularly this year when a lot of things are operating slightly differently that you might expect. If you think your child would benefit from some additional preparation before they move in this September, share with them our recent blog on top things they can do at home to prepare for university.

We will also be offering our students a full and engaged calendar of events throughout the year, some of which be in person (with social distancing in mind) and also online so that they can join in without leaving their room.

Flexibility is needed now more than ever so if anything changes (or you’re unable to travel due to travel restrictions in the UK or from abroad) we’re here to support you.  We can make sure the start of the tenancy matches with your university start date so they begin at the same time. For more information on our flexible booking options, check out Abodus Pledges.

We’re here to reassure you that we’re doing everything we can to keep our residents safe and give peace of mind to all loving parents and guardians who are entrusting us with their children. Your student will have the support and safety that they need when they choose to live with Abodus.

However, if you still have any concerns, no matter how small, you can get in touch with the site team by phone or email. There is always someone on the other end of the phone happy to chat through and help as much as possible. For easy access, see all our site contact details below:
