With plenty of options for every budget, whatever your taste buds fancy, your sure to find it in Sheffield. There’s plenty of the familiar national chains on offer here, but don’t be afraid to venture off-piste into Sheffield’s thriving independent scene. Here you’ll be rewarded with artisan cafes, impossibly cool coffee houses, mouth-watering street food and innovative restaurants using local produce and drawing inspiration from all continents.

If beer is you thing, well, as the birthplace of the UK craft beer revolution, Sheffield is at the forefront of the British brewing scene. On a typical day, around 400 different, unique beers are available to try in the city’s rustic pubs and quirky bars.

Sheffield is renowned for its Henderson’s relish, so why not add it to with an award-winning pie from Pieminister, or chips from Two Steps, Sheffield’s premier chippy. For afters, Eve Kitchen is literally around the corner from The Elements – to help with that sweet tooth try the cheesecake in a doughnut and have your life changed for the better!

If you’re looking for something a little more hearty, head to Wellies café, offering classic full English breakfast, alongside a sandwich menu which will keep you going until you’re ready for dinner.

The city boasts many suburbs which are student and budget friendly alike, and a host of independent eateries which will leave you wanting more. Ecclesall Road has long been a student hive, with great pub food and takeaways, as well as restaurants for when your parents visit or you’re doing your best to impress.

Just Falafs for those looking for a traditional Middle-Eastern street food, as well as anyone looking for a vegan fix. It is a place that serves delicious food, 100% homemade vegan food with the hummus and pita to die for.

For a range of international takeaways and restaurants, head over to London Road. There is Rassam’s Creamery, a dessert-only restaurant where you can indulge in ice cream, waffles, milkshakes, cookies and cake.

Food halls more than ever have become more popular and Sheffield boasts, Kommun and Peddler Market where you can find a wide range of food stalls and vendors selling food and drink from a variety of countries.

Like any city in the U.K, there are Wetherspoon pubs, offering cheap meals and student discounts.

HEADLINE EVENTS IN SHEFFIELD

Sheffield is a vibrant city with venues and spaces hosting events throughout the year. From modern art exhibitions to world class theatre and citywide festivals, there are great events going on, in and around Sheffield, throughout the year.

As the birth place of the Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, Def Leppard, The Human League and Bring Me The Horizon, you also won’t be surprised that the city has a thriving music scene, with more than a few gigs on offer most days of the week.

And true to its name as The Outdoor City, there’s also a steady programme of outdoor events across cycling, mountain biking, climbing, running and more.

Sheffield City Hall is located in the heart of city and includes the main hall which has a capacity of over 2000 seats, the smaller memorial hall for intimate events and the ballroom. It hosts all sorts of entertainment, ranging from live music and comedy to tea dances and banqueting events.

The Millennium Gallery is Sheffield’s premier destination for art, craft and designs that highlight the importance of the city to the industrial revolution.

Tramlines festival takes place at the 30,000 capacity Hillsborough Park and home to 70-acts playing on four stages.  A simple 15-minute tram journey from the city out to the festival or there are dozens of free gigs taking place in and around the city centre.

Off the Shelf is one of the largest and most accessible literary festivals in the UK. Every year we bring the biggest names in literature and the arts to Sheffield. Previous festivals have included Sandi Toksvig, Kate Adie Jamie Oliver – to name just a few.

The city is famous for the Sheffield Food Festival that takes place every.  It is a celebration of the city’s vibrant food scene, showcasing great local produce, talented chefs, mouth-watering street food and outstanding brewers and distillers.

Doc/Fest is a documentary film festival taking place every summer. Filmmakers from all around the world, and welcoming over 20,000 people to the festival.

GOING OUT OUT IN SHEFFIELD

Whether it’s sipping a couple of cocktails or partying at a club, Sheffield has a lively night-time scene where spirits are high all year round. 

While of course great pubs and bars can be found throughout Sheffield (see Kelham Island, the Antiques Quarter and Ecclesall Road), the City Centre is the main hub where the nightlife takes place, complemented by a great range of theatre and live entertainment venues. Whether you’re there for the cheesy pop nights, indie bands or a techno rave, Sheffield has the venue for you.

Once again the compactness of the city centre lends itself to a great night out on a budget and there really is no need for expensive cabs. West StreetCarver Street and Division Street adjoin to provide the main circuit of bars and pubs, though each street maintains its own distinct character. The West Street strip is the biggest and busiest of the three, where larger chains intermingle with independents. On Carver Street you’ll find a cluster of bars/small clubs which open to the early hours playing a diverse range of music on different nights and host VIPS in exclusive areas, while Division Street has a more relaxed bohemian vibe, but is no less lively.

The Elements is in the perfect location for you to take advantage of a night out in the city, being within walking distance to The West Street, having been built conveniently near Ecclesall Road. If you are looking for a ‘pub crawl’, there is a fantastic range of bars and clubs here and Ecclesall Road itself has plenty, making it a great destination for students looking to sample many different places on the same night out.

The Original Bierkeller is open until 3am with many offers on for drinks, shots, and bratwurst (great to soak up the alcohol after a few steins!).

The Leadmill, known for its indie theme and live music scene or you want to take advantage of the many craft ale bars in the city, such as The Fat Cat or The Beer House. 

Sheffield is a real hotspot for craft ale and beers, with 23 breweries in the city and over 400 unique beers coming out of this wonderful town. Kelham Island has long been at the forefront of Sheffield’s brewing reputation and has become a mecca for renowned real ale pubs such at the Kelham Island TavernThe Riverside and Gardener’s Rest. If you are looking to provide the beer for a student party, Beer Central in The Moor Market is a fantastic place to buy kegs and bottles made by Sheffield breweries.

Other great live music venues in the city include Plug, as well as the O2 Academy for larger touring bands, for big bands touring the country.

Shopaholics

WHERE TO SHOP IN SHEFFIELD

As we know, students are living on a tight budget, so it is important to understand what’s available to you in terms of shopping.

The shopping scene in Sheffield is extremely impressive for a place that’s better known for its industrial past and present arts and culture scenes. From city centre high street brands and out of city shopping centres, to independent boutiques and alternative stores, Sheffield has something for all you shopaholics out there.

Living at The Elements means you are in walking distance of the city centre shops with a range of supermarkets on your doorstep. In the heart of the city centre, only a few minutes’ walk from The Elements is Fargate. Home to high street shopping, you’ll find more big brands such as River Island, M&S, John Lewis and Waterstones.

The Moor, again only a few minutes from The Elements, is a part of the city centre that has undergone some exciting developments over the last few years. This has included the opening of a new cinema, a gym and bowling alley. Along with big brands such as JD Sports and NEXT, you can also pick up a great bargain and with the Moor Market. Overall, this place offer more than just shopping, although there’s a great line-up of high street brands & independents, a choice of cafés to start your day & keep you going.

Ecclesall Road is a big student area and is home to lots of independents, charity shops and cafes, where you can sit outside and watch the world go by and Division Street continues to offer more alternative offerings. It is a hot-spot of designer boutiques and vintage shops that also happens to boast some the best bars in the city centre. The Forum is a perfect example as it combines both, with a small arcade of shops spilling into a vibrant bar.

Meadowhall is one of the big shopping centres in the UK and is located just outside the city centre. It is home to all of the big brands including Primark, NEXT, Apple and Sports Direct to name a few. The venue covers 1.4 million sq ft of floor space and inhabits 290 stores from top independent and international brands, 50 places to eat in Sheffield and drink, and an 11-screen cinema.  Ever since it opened in 1990 on the site of a former steelworks, Meadowhall’s been the place to shop in Sheffield in the region.

Sports

SPORT & LEISURE IN SHEFFIELD

Sheffield has a long history of involvement in sport. Although cricket was the first organised sport, it has gradually been supplanted by football. Both the main two local football teams grew out of cricket teams. Sheffield can claim many firsts in football the most famous one being Sheffield FC, founded in 1857. Sheffield has a long history in sport and was labelled the ‘National City of Sport’, boasting some of the finest facilities in the country. Today it has a club in every major team sport in England.

The city is home to a Premier League and Championship football club, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, topflight ice hockey (Sheffield Steelers) and basketball team (Sheffield Sharks). Also, a Premier League speedway (Sheffield Tigers) and its main rugby league team, the Sheffield Eagles who play in the league below the Super League.

The city is also home to the Snooker World Championships which has taken place at the Crucible Theatre since 1977.

Choose from ice hockey with the Sheffield Steelers, both codes of rugby with the Sheffield Tigers and Eagles, the famous Sheffield Sharks basketball side, and speedway at Owlerton Stadium – the fastest track in Britain.

As a student living in the city you have everything you need, you’ll never struggle to find some form of sport to take part in.

Going on long walks, hikes, or runs, Sheffield has parks and is known at the green city.  Endcliffe Park and Sheffield Botanical Gardens are both spaces that are a great place to walk and unwind with friends.

The Peak District is also on the city’s doorstep, which is suitable for walking, running and biking, so you are really are not short of options. Climbers flock to Sheffield for the excellent array of indoor climbing walls. From disused railway line the Monsal Trail to picturesque reservoir loops, the nearby Peak District has tons of glorious routes to charm cyclists. And, for all kinds of leisure pursuit, including Olympic sized pool and diving pool, a visit to Ponds Forge is a must.

If you are looking to get active as a student in Sheffield, whether you are training with a view to becoming a professional, just for fun with friends, or to stay fit and healthy, there are plenty of team and individual sports clubs and facilities for you to use.

The biggest sporting event for students has to be The annual Varsity tournament takes places where both Sheffield Hallam and Sheffield University come together for a day of competition. The event comprises over 60 fixtures, 23 different venues, 1,000 athletes and 15,000 spectators.

Sheffield Hallam University is located right in the heart of Sheffield. With over 35,000 students, it has established itself as a university that is regarded in high esteem because of the variety of courses, with over 300 and applied learning opportunities. Delivering approximately 24,000 placements each year, the largest provider of teacher training, health, social care, and sport. The Sheffield Institute of Art held its first major art and design degree show in 2006. Since then the annual event has become one of the biggest student exhibitions in the north, showcasing outstanding work by our talented artists, makers, designers, photographers and filmmakers. The show regularly attracts the attention of leading national figures in the creative industries, as well as art lovers from across the region.

The Student’s Union provides the opportunity for students to volunteer for local community schemes, through to having the support to develop your skills through 1-2-1 coaching sessions. With sports clubs ranging from netball to lacrosse and societies for students to get involved with, there is endless opportunities to build friendship groups.

A sighted ‘World Top University’, The University of Sheffield was founded over 100 years ago and is one of the 24 leading UK universities for research and teaching.  The University is a leading research institute, with a world-renowned reputation for success, initiative, and excellence. The Student’s Union is home to sports clubs and societies that allow any student the chance to sample different experiences. It’s easy to do what you love here.
